St. James United Methodist Church is a Christ-Centered community of faith, sharing God's Love, growing together in faith, and serving our community and world. St. James is known for its warm, welcoming, and family atmosphere. We extend a personal invitation for you to worship with us and to participate in the ministries of our church.
From Four Families to a Vibrant Congregation
St. James United Methodist Church traces its roots to December 1983 when four families, the Eubanks, the Wallaces, the Mackenzies, and the Dangerfields, gathered at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goose Creek. They continued to meet at homes on Sundays until the appointment of their first full-time pastor, Rev. David E. Nichols, in June 1984. Initially meeting in homes, the congregation moved to the Berkeley Electric Cooperative Building in September 1984, and attendance grew to an average of 75. The church officially became a United Methodist congregation during a chartering service in June 1985.
With growth came the need for a new church building, and on May 10, 1987, the first building sketch was presented. A Ground Breaking Ceremony was held in September 1987, and the consecration and dedication of the new church building was held on November 17, 1988. Bishop Bethea and Rev. Tom Brittain, District Superintendent, sent their greetings and best wishes, and on December 4, 1988, the first worship service was held in the new building. Today, St. James UMC continues to grow as a vibrant congregation serving its community and world.
At St. James United Methodist Church, we are committed to serving our community and sharing God's love with everyone. We aim to continue growing together in our faith, deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ, and supporting one another as we navigate the ups and downs of life. We believe that we are called to make a positive difference in the world around us, and we strive to live out this calling through our various ministries and outreach programs. As we look to the future, we are excited to see where God will lead us and how we can continue to make a meaningful impact in our community and beyond.
What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you're always welcome at St. James UMC. We're saving a seat for you. Wherever you're at in your faith journey, you'll always be accepted as part of the St. James family.
